Septic arthritis can be described as a very painful infection of a joint. It can be caused either by bacteria or, less frequently, by fungi, which spread to a joint from other parts of the body. But there are cases when only the joint becomes infected, while other areas are untouched. After the germs have infiltrated the joint, a person feels acute pain, warmth, and the joint swells.
